I saw this book on offer as a Kindle Freebie. The author had posted it to the list and mentioned that the book won honorable mention in the 2012 Leapfrog Press Fiction Contest.

I would have looked at this book at any rate, since the premise sounded interesting. A check of the 'look inside' feature made me decide that I liked the writing style - descriptive but spare, not flowery. The story opened quickly, and I was quickly engaged with the characters.

This book is well-written. It gets into the heads of the characters and provides an engaging, believable account of their actions.

The story is straight-forward: Alissa's mother has come back into her life. And the terrible thought of going back to her abusive, alcoholic, unstable woman frightens her. She and her older brother, Trent, decide to run away to Seattle, to try to find their father.

You learn this in the course of the first chapter, and the story goes from there. Tzucker's charactrizations are very good. The kids are wary, slightly cynical from years in the social welfare system, with only themselves to rely on and a slight hope to go for.

I'm not going to post any spoilers. This is a good book, and I'd recommend it for YA readers as well as older ones. There is an understanding of human nature, a good way with descriptions - spare, evocative, moving. Reading it is time well spent.

I recommend the book; I'm glad I picked up a copy.

Run Away Home is a very engaging novel. It is the story of two teenaged siblings in foster care who attempt to find their real father in an effort to avoid living with their jailbird, drug-addicted mother. They embark on a journey with very few clues and no money.

The author superbly presents their case to readers as they face various tribulations along the way. Her simple and lucid rendition of the siblings' efforts to pursue their last hope keeps the reader gripped to this novel. Through the rich variety of characters the author analyses various aspects of human behavior. The harsh reality of the foster care system is vividly portrayed, and through it all shines the unbreakable bond between the siblings.

Run Away Home is so captivating that once I began reading it, I could not put it down. I will most heartily recommend this book to everyone.
Run Away Home chronicles the life of two siblings on their search for security and family after they've run away from the foster care system. It is a good, suspenseful little story that is laced with compassion, friendship, and even a little romance. I think it's perfect for adolescents because it's not terribly long, the narrative voice is direct and simple to understand, and the urge to continue reading to find out what happens carries the reader through the end of the book.
I love stories like this...a road trip adventure with lots of twist and turns.
The characters are wonderful; you catch yourself rooting for all of them.
I especially enjoyed the relationship between Alissa and her brother.
I highly recommend this YA read.

Run Away Home is a great coming of age story about a 16-year-old girl who is looking for a stable family. The main character is so endearing I found myself cheering for her the whole way through. The rest of the characters are a lot of fun, too. From her older brother who is struggling with his own sense of identity to the heroes and villains they meet along the way, this novel is really a great read. There are a few surprise twists along the way that keep it interesting, and the writing flows and keeps you turning the pages (or tapping them since it's ). I definitely recommend this book!
This was such an enjoyable read! This book includes so many twists and turns, I couldn't put it down! It is evident that Tzucker carefully sculpted this piece to include events that have you rooting for Alissa and Trent, a brother/sister duo, until the very end. What I loved about Alissa and Trent is that typically you see brothers and sisters fighting and arguing with one another on t.v. shows and in other reading material. However, it is evident how the events in Alissa and Trent's lives have created an unbreakable bond and their words and actions display their unconditional love for one another. In the end, they are forced to redefine what family means to them. Tzucker also tastefully brings to the forefront topics that are imperative for everyone to understand the foster care system, homeless teens, and child prostitution. This is a book for the young and young at heart and I highly recommend reading and discussing this book with your loved ones. On a personal note, I live in Seattle and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to picture in my head the scenes set in my hometown.

Tzucker shows good insight into the imperfect system via the life of these children as they search for answers by taking action in their own way. They, like so many foster children, are caught between a rock and a hard spot.

The author does an excellent job on characterization, which makes for a really good read as well. The narration flows well and is not forced.
