That Scandalous Summer Rules for the Reckless Meredith Duran 9781451606966 Books

I wanted so much to love this book. Meredith Duran is one of those writers who imbues her work with an almost effortless depth and insight, and she writes skillfully about familial dynamics and relationships beyond just the characters' romantic entanglements. Unfortunately, her characters tend to cross that dangerously thin line from 'relatably flawed' to 'just not very likable or root-worthy' for me. It really is primarily an issue of personal preference---the older I get, the more I find myself craving romances with a little more mood-boosting wit and charm, featuring characters who are imperfect yet still lovable. Duran's work tends to be excessively grim for me (not to mention a little too heavy on the explicit sex, but that's just me!), and her characters are somewhat difficult for me to like and feel invested in. The pacing here feels a little slow, with most individual scenes stretching out for several pages.

I've bored you all with this line before, but it really does apply here: I like HOW Duran writes far more than WHAT she writes. Hope springs eternal, though, so I'll keep hoping that one of her books will not just impress me objectively, but actually delight me more personally.

That Scandalous Summer Rules for the Reckless Meredith Duran 9781451606966 Books Reviews

The hero is Michael de Grey, a doctor who runs a hospital for the poor. He receives his funds from his brother, Alastair, the Duke of Marwick. The problem is that Alastair's wife recently died. After her death, Alastair found out she was unfaithful to him, was on drugs, and that she betrayed him by divulging government secrets to her many lovers. Now Alastair is depressed, bitter, and has become a recluse. Michael will try anything to help his brother start living his life again. In Alastair's bitterness, he threatens to cut off funds to Michael and the hospital, if Michael doesn't comply with his wishes.

Michael wants to teach his brother a lesson by hiding in a small town away from Alastair's influence. He survives by becoming the doctor of the small community.

One morning, Michael finds the heroine, Mrs. Chudderley, aka Elizabeth (or Liza) in his garden in a drunken stupor. Her reputation in society as the Merry Widow, includes fast living, drunken scenes; and, she is a professional beauty.

Michael portrays himself as the poor country doctor whereas Liza is a lady of high society. She looks down on him as part of the middle class that would never be able to have one such as her. But she is attracted to him nonetheless.

Great hero and heroine and HEA. This book flows naturally into the next book Fool Me Twice where we take a deeper look into Alastair's life.
"She could not assault innocent country doctors. She would give him the vapors."

THE STORY Lord Michael de Grey, a medical doctor, is the brother of a Duke. When a dispute with his brother leads him getting the ultimatum of marrying a woman without scandal or having his life's work pulled out from under him, Michael escapes to masquerade as a country doctor. In his disguise, he meets Elizabeth Chudderly, a merry widow who masks her loneliness and sadness with a bright facade. Liza has had marriage to a man who constantly criticized her and an affair with a man who abandoned her when he found out her money problems. She has decided that she must marry again and be satisfied with financial security. When she meets the new country doctor, she enjoys the flirtation. As Liza and Michael become entangled with one another, both know that they have no future together and yet cannot resist one another.

OPINION I am a big fan of well-written angst filled stories where there seems to be no way forward for the hero and heroine together. This book fits that bill. Michael and Liza initially seems destined for an affair. In fact, if the two had met as themselves, they might have had an affair and never ventured deeper into one another's lives.

Because the two are lying to one another, they end up going deeper into themselves and revealing truths that they did not expect. They are both in desperate need for someone to love and to love them.

Their interactions are deep and complex and at times painful with the truths they reveal. Their uneven journey to committing to one another regardless of the circumstances is simply beautiful.

The story felt fresh with characters who are difficult and layered and not easily categorized. I especially appreciated the writing of Liza as a woman who has made serious mistakes about love and yet is accepted by Michael as worthy of love and respect.

WORTH MENTIONING Fans of Duran will be pleased with updates on some of her characters from prior books.

FINAL DECISION Loved this book. Full of angst and drama and intense love in conflict with practicality.

CONNECTED BOOKS THAT SCANDALOUS SUMMER is book one in the Rules for the Reckless series. The book can be read as a standalone. Readers should know that a story begins here regarding the hero's brother that will be continued in the next book in the series.

STAR RATING I give this book 4.5 stars.
